Different SATA connectors can have different numbers of pins, depending on power requirements. Regular SATA is 7+15, yes. Micro SATA is 7+9, just like mSATA, whereas slimline SATA is 7+6. Fewer pins can be used if the disks don't require a lot of power or multiple voltages.

Just remove the SATA HDD ribbon cable and mounting bracket, and then the larger battery swaps right in. And then yes of course you’d install a regular SSD into the mSATA slot. I’d recommend the Samsung 860 Evo.

Nov 10, 2020 · That 1 GB/s speed is for a single PCI-Express lane, but it's possible to use multiple lanes. Under the M.2 SSD specification, up to four lanes can be used. Using two lanes would theoretically provide 2.0 GB/s, while four lanes would provide up to 4.0 GB/s. With the eventual release of PCI-Express 4.0, these speeds would effectively double.
